SSI Diagnostica has a strain collection containing more than 64,000 E. coli strains, of which most are clinical isolates. The collection contains both wild types and reference strains.
The reference strains are primarily sold as freeze-dried ampoules, whilst most wild type strains are sold as agar slant in transport medium. Freeze-dried strains can be stored for many years in unopened ampoules at room temperature. Once the ampoule is opened, the strain must be used immediately. Strains sent in agar slant must be plated out within a week from receipt and resown, as strains cannot survive in transport agar for long. All strains are typed for the antigen they are sold under just before sale.
The strains sent in agar slant can be plated out directly, while the freeze-dried ampoules must be added 1 mL bouillon, incubated overnight at 37°C, and the entire ampoule contents must be transferred onto a plate. The plate is incubated overnight at 37°C, and the strain can now be used for the intended purpose, or frozen slants can be made of it.
If you have E. coli strains that cannot be typed, please contact SSI Diagnostica, firstname.lastname@example.org.
When purchasing bacterial strains, we kindly ask you to fill out a Material Transfer agreement.
We primarily sell reference strains and have reference strains for all O, H, K and F antigens, various toxins and other E. coli virulence factors. The strain collection also contains wild type strains representing a wide selection of the possible serotypes and virulence factors in various combinations. When ordering a wild type strain, it is important to specify which antigen/virulence combinations are required, as our strain bank, as mentioned, consists of more than 64,000 strains. For example, an order may appear as follows:
A) An O149:H18 strain. The rest of the antigens and virulence factors are unimportant.orB) Three strains that all contain the eae gene. Serotype irrelevant. orC) Six O26 strains with different H antigens.
Please note, concerning the OK O serotypes, that except for the OK O strains OK O26, OK O45, OK O55, OK O114 and OK O157, the other OK O serotypes are matched with the O strains with the corresponding number e.g. OK O86 antisera is matched with the O86 strain.
Note, that due to the nature of some of the E. coli strains (marked with "*") they will be added an extra shipment cost. These are send according to UN 2814.
Strains which are not marked "*" are send according to UN 3373.

Frequently asked questions about E. coli strains.
Material Transfer Agreement
Q: Can I order products that do not appear in the catalogue?A: Please send an inquiry. Depending on the needed volume, we might be able to develop the requested product. It can be anything from a new pool composition to a new antiserum.
Q: Can I buy reference strains at SSI Diagnostica?A: Yes, you can buy all reference strains for the O, H and K antigens. We also have a database containing more than 62,000 wild type strains, which you can also buy.
Q: Can I buy strains with specific genes?A: Yes, you can buy strains based on gene composition, sero group, verotoxins, host animal etc.
Q: Is there a list of the E. coli strains offered by SSI Diagnostica?A: We have more than 62,000 E. coli strains, so please send an enquiry for your specific needs.
Q: Can I get training in the use of antisera from SSI Diagnostica?A: We offer a yearly training course. Contact us for more information.
Q: What is the difference between reference strains, test strains and wild type strains?A: A reference strain is a microorganism defined to at least the genus and species level, catalogued and described according to its characteristics e.g. O, K and H serotype and stating its origin.A test strain is generally used for quality control and performance testing of culture media or serving as a positive/negative control in a diagnostic kit ensuring that the performance of the test has been successful.Wild type strains are isolates from patients, animals or other sources, and these are not well defined.
Q: How long time does a serotyping at SSI Diagnostica take?A: It can usually be done within three weeks.
Q: How should a strain be sent?A: You should send the strain according to your national legislation. The strain should be transported in an ordinary transport medium (Stuarts, Cary Blair, lyophilised or likewise), and the package should be marked with an UN number corresponding to the content of the package.
Q: If we would like to have a strain typed, who should we contact?A: SSI Diagnosticainfo@ssidiagnostica.com
Q: What are the benefits of antisera from SSI Diagnostica?A: The main advantages are:1. We offer the full range of antisera for E. coli serotyping.2. Reaction time for OK O antisera is only 10 seconds reducing the risk of false positive reactions leading to a more accurate result compared to other tests having a reaction time of 1 minute.3. SSI antisera are absorbed and thus very specific.4. We offer technical expertise and assistance / training.
